Christchurch Warned Of Power Shortage

[Per Press Association. —Copyright! CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.

A warning that the supply of electric power might: have to be curtailed at the end of this month or early next month, the period of the peak load in Christchurch, was given by Mr. M. E. Lyons at a meeting of the Christchurch City Council when reviewing operations in the municipal electricity department in the past year.

“We have been fortunate in having got this far through the winter without the Public Works Department having to curtail the supply of current,” said Mr. Lyons. The Public Works Department, he added, would have a difficult problem to face, especially if this was a severe winter. However, the department had coped with the. problem satisfactorily so far, and he was hopeful that it would successfully pass the testing period of the peak load.

Mr. J. R. Barnett said he did not share Mr. Lyons’ fears of a power shortage, and a recent statement by the Minister lor Public Works was l’eassuring.
