The case was brought by the police on behalf of the Child Welfare Department an affiliation order for two children, twin boys, being asked. Sergeant W. J. B. Grainger said that while twins had been born in August, one child had died last March, and therefore the application was amended
Paternity Denied
After hearing the evidence of the girl and other witnesses, as well as evidence by Pou admitting intercourse but denying paternity, the magistrate adjudged Pou the father of the child and ordered him to pay 12/6 per week for its maintenance, £4/7/6 expenses incidental to the birth and £2/4/6 witnesses’ expenses. Pou said he was not able to pay. The magistrate: Why can’t you pay ? Pou: The kid doesn’t belong to me
The magistrate pointed cut that the case had been heard, the court had decided that he was the father, and therefore he must pay.
Pou: There’s only one thing now. That’s gaol. The magistrate: That is for you to decide, but I hope you won’t be so foolish.
