“Conscience” Made Him Destroy Rifle
[Special to “Northern Advocate”] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. A man who destroyed his .303 calibre rifle before he received an impressment notice from' the Government, Keir Hardie Samms, appeared in the Police Court charged with failing to give notice of the destruction of the rifle to the authorised arms officer. Samms pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs. Sub-Inspector Turner, who prosecuted, said Samms was sent an impressment notice for the rifle from the National Service Department. Samms wrote back saying that he had destroyed the rifle. “Inquiries were made and Samms made a statement to the police in which he said that, because of his holding conscientious views, he had anticipated the impressment notice and destroyed the rifle, throwing it in pieces in the Heathcote River,” said Mr. Turner. Samms said that he had not been aware that he had to notify the destruction of the rifle. He did so immediately the impressment notice was. sent.
