Donations to Hospital Donations to the Whangarei Hospital from the following persons were acknowledged by the hospital board at its meeting yesterday: Mrs. Ellin (fruit), Mrs. Thorne, Mrs. Pollock, Mrs. Surman and Happiness Club (books). * * * * Forced Landing. Air Force headquarters announce that an airman-pilot under training. Leading-Aircraftsman Archibald Scott Ritchie Mac Alister, son of Mr D. C. Mac Alister, Palmerston North, was slightly injured yesterday morning when a machine in which he was flying made a forced landing near Blenheim. He was admitted to the station sick quarters.
Hospital Staff Not to Join Home Guard Advice has been received by the Whangarei Hospital Board from the Department of Health to the effect that members of hospital staffs should not join the Home Guard organisation and that any members now in the Guard should resign. The department stated that in an emergency which required the mobilisation of the Home Guard it would be essential that the hospital staffs were at their respective institutions.
* « H Z Russell Upset Causes Oyster Shortage
A barge loaded with 200 sacks of oysters capsized in an easterly gale off Russell last week, and caused a shortage of supplies in Auckland over the week-end. All the oysters were later recovered, and were available at the Government depot yesterday. Since the opening of the season on May 29 the demand for oysters has been very brisk. There were good supplies of oysters available at the depot and in the shops yesterday.
Hit-and-Run Lorry Driver. While Mr. Chung Leung, market gardener, of Maungatapere, was proceeding to Whangarei early yesterday morning, his motor lorry was struck by another lorry, the body, of the vehicle wrecked and the vegetables scattered. The other vehicle did not stop. The accident happened on the hill opposite Mr. K. Stevens’ house. Two lorries approached from the direction of Whangarei, the first passing ,Mr. Leung’s vehicle, while the second struck the trpckload of vegetables. : ■ . / ' - . •
Mushrooms Still Being Picked Despite the lateness of the season, mushrooms are still being picked in .some localities in the Whangarei district. Ruakaka and Waipu seem to be the most favoured districts for the growth of mushrooms at this late period. * * * * Rum For Territorials On recent military manoeuvres in the South, Territorials had a rum issue. The weather was cold and wet and old soldier's ascribe the freedom from sickness enjoyed by the troops to the old Army and Navy custom. * w e ft Hospital Statistics During last month 294 patients were admitted to the Whangarei Hospital, this number including 30 admitted to the maternity annexe. At the end of the month there were 100 patients, in--cluding nine in the annexe, at the hospital, as compared with 133, 19 in the annexe, at the beginning of the month. * * * $ Footballer Killed A footballer, James McKay, aged 20, died in hospital yesterday from the effects of a severe injury about the neck suffered in a senior B grade Rugby match at Wanganui on Satur-| day. He was hurt in making a high tackle on the goal-line. * * # * Cook's Suicide The body of a Norwegian station cook, Mr. William Robert Russel, aged 60, who had been missing since May 17, when he left a. service car owing to car sickness, was recovered from the Uawa River at Tolaga Bay, East Coast, during the weekend. At an inquest it was revealed that a bag of stones was tied to the body, and a verdict was returned of suicide while temporarily of unsound mind.
Rifle Impressment -■ Under the impressment regulations, 450 rifles from the Whangarei police district, which embraces the whole of Northland, have been surrendered. Twenty owners have made applidation for i etention of their rifles, principally for the destruction of deer, wild pigs and wild cattle, and they have been forwarded to the Director of National Service for consideration. Home Guardsmen owning rifles have surrendered them, but have had them returned.
