U.S. Makes IndoChina Angry
(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, May 23. Anti-American sentiment in Indochina was increased by violent Press attacks three days ago, due to alleged United States’ refusal to sell oil to Indo-China, and also the blocking of Indo-China credits, says a Saigon message. An authoritative United Press source states: “United States’ policies against Indo-China are forcing us entirely into Japanese hands.” Compulsory Service in East Indies Measures providing for compulsory military service for the native population in the Netherlands East Indies are reported from Batavia. These measures have been introduced by the Netherlands East Indies Parliament following patriotic requests by many thousands of islanders, who desire to participate in defence. New units to be formed will result in much stronger coast protection, plus extensive garrisoning inland.
