Plant out cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce. Sow onions, lettuce, broad beans, early peas. Earth up celery and leeks as they require it. Prepare rhubarb beds by cleaning, digging and manuring. Plant potato onions, tree onions and shallots. Lift kumaras and late potatoes before the soil becomes too wet and cold. A good time for the planling of evergreen fruit trees. The pruning of fruit trees may be commenced any time now. Prepare new asparagus beds.
In sheltered, well-drained gardens this is a good time for the' planting of stock. Dig in wellrotted manure or bonedust before planting. The Livingstone Daisy, mesembryanehemum crinifiorum, an annual ice plant, was very popular last season. Plant in sunny, welldrained beds. The plants will stand light frosts when, well hardened off. Larkspur and delphinium seed may be sown novo Seedlings from this sowing should flower in early summer. The delphinium needs a richer soil than the larkspur. The rose and mauve larkspurs look well planted near the delphiniums. For killing greasy cut worms and grass grubs, water about the plants

Keep spring sowing in mind, and get ready every square inch of ground. Rhubarb clumps that have been in the ground for two or three years should be lifted and divided for replanting. Strong one-year-old roots are best for planting. Trees infested with moss or lichens should have a good cleaning wash when pruning is finished. Keep the ground clean between strawberry plants, but do not cultivate too close to the plants. Look over onions, pumpkins and roots in store. Remove any showing signs of decay.
with arsenate of lead, or sprinkle a little of the powder about the roots. Iceland poppies like lime. If the ground has been well manured and the plants are not looking well, fork in lime about them.
In case we should get heavy frosts this winter, it is wise to cover small, tender plants with sheets of glass over a frame. Many plants may be safely moved to frost-free quarters for the winter months. Continue to plant out sweet peas, viola, stock, pansy, calendula, cineraria, nemesia, etc., for spring bloom. The last two will need shelter from frost and wind. Verbena, carnation. lobelia and schizanthus may be grown under glass for planting out in the spring.
