Teachers Not To Staid By After Present Term Ends

[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day.

An instruction issued by the Minister for Health (Mr. Nordmeyer) on Wednesday, that teachers in Northland were to stand by their schools, which had been closed on account of the meningitis outbreak, and were not to travel from their areas, has been qualified by a notice issued yesterday by the Auckland Education Board at the instance of the Education Department. The education board states that teachers in the Northland health district are not required to stand by after the end of the current term, but they are required to observe the Health Department’s request to avoid unnecessary travelling. The Health Department advises that teachers should spend their time in the open air as much as possible. The secretary of the board (Mr. D. W. Dunlop) stated yesterday that the notice had been drafted by the Education Department and dictated over the telephone from Wellington. If it appeared to conflict in any way with the direction issued by the Minister of Health, the board could not be considered responsible.
