Neglect Or Treachery Silenced Nauru Radio
CANBERRA, April 2
The failure of the authorities at Nauru Island to notify vessels of the approach of a German raider could be attributed either to treachery or to gross negligence, said the Minister for the Navy (Mr Hughes) in the House of Representatives today. Mr Hughes was commenting on the report of the New Zealand Government Commission on leakages of shipping information. Mr Hughes said it was obvious that the presence of the raider was known or that she was within range of Nauru, which fact, Mr Hughes emphasised, ought to have been wirelessed to every ship within 1000 miles radius of the island. Report from Administration.
The Acting Prime Minister (Mr Fadden) supplemented Mr Hughes’ comment, and added that the Commonwealth Government was looking forward to receiving a copy of the New Zealand commission’s report.
It was also intended to ask the Nauru administration for a report on the German raid, said Mr Fadden, and appropriate action would be taken if the circumstances warranted.
