OBITUARY
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] KAITAIA, This Day.
At her son’s residence, Kaitaia, another survivor of the fifth generation of pioneers in the person of Mrs. R. A. Northwood, senior, passed away on April 1; at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Northwood survived her husband by some 15 years. Born in 1859, Mrs. Northwood was the second daughter of Mr and Mrs. Thomas Harrison, pioneers of Omata. Taranaki, who landed at New Plymouth from the ship William Bryan in 1842, and the Amelia Thompson in the year 1843.
With her parents, Mrs. Northwood passed through all the vicissitudes of the Maori War, during her early girlhood. and until quite recently could clearly recall personal and family experiences of those troublous times.
45 Years In Mangonui
Except for occasional visits south, Mrs. Northwood had lived constinuously in the Mangonui county for the past 45 years. Though Mrs. Northwood had attained the age of 81 years last August, there is little doubt that her end was hastened by meeting with a painful accident some 18 months ago. She had been invited to attend the Taranaki celebrations of 100 years of European settlement and died upon the day of the celebrations. There ai'e two sons, Messrs. R. A. Northwood and A. J. Northwood, both of Kaitaia, and five grandchildren. At the funeral today the pall bearers were old Houhora boys.
