Less Expended On Whangarei Highways
Compared with the previous six years, expenditure on highways in the Whangarei county decreased during the financial year ended March 31, Last year £8193 was expended. In 1939-40 the amount was £11,022; 193839, £10,155; 1937-38. £9362; 1936-37, £16,395 (a record); 1935-36, £12,437; 1934-35, £9938; 1933-34, £5899; 1932-33, £7986; 1931-32, £BIOS. From the year 1931-32, the mileage of highways in the county has increased from 146 to 154 miles. In 1937-38, however, there were 217 miles of highway in the county. The average cost per mile of maintenance of highway has also decreased. Last year the cost was £55, the previous year it was £73, but in 1934-35 it was only £SO.
