Gift Beer With Sandwich, Wrong

[Special to “Northern Advocate”]

NAPIER, This Day

At a patriotic beach carnival in Napier one of the most popular stalls was one where it was possible to procure a sandwich together with a glass of beer, shandy or soft drink. When w'arned by the police, the stall attendants claimed that they were within the law on the ground that they were selling the sandwiches at 6d each and gave the drink free. The police had other ideas and based a prosecution on the alleged sale of liquor w'ithout a license. Must Respect Law.

In view of the' nature of the occasion, Mr J. Miller, S.M., imposed a nominal fine of £1 on the secretary of the organisation which conducted the carnival, but issued a warning against breaches of the law even for the benefit of worthy causes. He emphasised that enthusiasm for a worthy cause must not carry people away to think that they could break the law, and the law must be respected even in the organisation of attractions to aid patriotic funds.
