All 303 Rifles May Be Impressed
[Per Fress Association. Copyright]
WELLINGTON, This Day
The impressment of all privatelyowned .303 rifles for use by the Homo Guard is under consideration by the Government.
The recent appeal to citizens to lend rifles to Home Guard members met with a poor response and, although no definite action, has yet been taken by the authorities to legalise impress-
ment, it is thought that action will be taken shortly unless more privatelyowned rifles are offered on loan. The Auckland Area Commander of the Home Guard (Major A. W. Short) stated last night that instructions had been received that the Government intends to proceed immediately with the impressment of all private rifles, although no notification had been received by the police. There are 780 serviceable and 108 unserviceable rifles privately-owned in Auckland as compared with 9500 required by the Home Guard in the metropolitan area and the two subareas.
