War's Toll Of Mercantile Shipping

[British Official Wireless] (Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, March 25. •Mercantile losses due to enemy action for the week ended midnight on March 16 were 23 ships with a total tonnage of 71,773, comprising 17 British of 60,670 tons, and six Allied of 11,103 tons. Since the beginning of the war—this being the 80th week —the Germans have lost by capture, sinking or scuttling, approximately 1,449,000 gross tons of shipping, and the Italians 790,000.

They also suffered the loss of some 620,000 tons of neutral shipping under their control or useful to them. Their losses for the five weeks to March 16 have been about 300,000 tons. Regarding the exaggerated German claims of tonnage sunk, it is realised here that these reports are obviously designed for foreign consumption, and to impress waverers with German invincibility, but they are often based on nothing more than the fact that an attack has been made.
