State of Bridges In Hokianga County
[Special to “Northern Advocate”l RAWENE, This Day.
The state of some of the bridges in the county was raised in the report of the engineer (Mr L. S. Donnelly) at the monthly meeting of the Hokianga County Council. Speaking of bridges subject to the Public Works grant he said that walings and braces had been placed in position on the Te Puia Stream bridge and Corbel’s. Although the bridge would not be completed by the end of this month very little should remain to be finished after that date.
Dealing with De Andrad’s Road bridge, the engineer stated that site surveys and borings had been completed, and the preparation of the plans would be put in hand as soon as possible. Regarding bridges on main highways, the report stated that the work of re-decking the Otongaroa bridge was in hand and it was found necessary to renew two of the stringers. This work was covered by a free grant. Repairs to the decking and stringers of the Kaiwaka bridge was completed. Decking repairs had been carried out to two bridges on the Wekaweka road. Bridges With Traffic Limits. “As instructed at the last meeting,” said the engineer, “the Punakitere, Parlane’s and Wairere bridges have been closed to all traffic over 15 cwt and necessary notices erected. I recommend that the Kohe bridge and Guthrey’s bridge also be closed to traffic over 15 cwt. “I have to report that the Punakitere bridge in particular is in a bad way, and a new one is required. It is possible to carry out temporary repairs in order to make the bridge reasonably safe for traffic, but these would be expensive. “I have been in touch with the Public Works Department and an inspection of the bridge was made by the designing engineer and the inspector of works, but so far no decision has been ipade and the matter & still 1 under discussion.
