Road Improvements Sought In Bay

Several requests for the provision of access roads and improvements to existing highways were received at the monthly meeting of the Bay County Council at Kawakawa. Okaihau Petititm. A petition signed by a number of ratepayers and business people in the Okaihau district was received, requesting that the highway through the township be tar-sealed. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the county engineer (Mr. Clifford) who is to prepare a report on the work entailed. Guarantees were made by the petitioners to the extent of £B3 14/-. Kaikohe-Ohaeawai Road. The secretary of the Kai'kohe Chamber of Commerce wrote asking that the council tar-seal the KaikoheOhaeawai road, and pointing out that this road carried more traffic than any other metal road north of Whangarei. Cr. G. H. McKenzie stated that the job was a big one, in that it would mean a large amount of new construction.

Mr. Clifford: About 70 chains of this road is now being sealed, together with some roads in the Kaikohe town area.

It was decided that the position be investigated and that the Chamber of Commerce be notified that a report would be forwarded at a later date. Access Requirements.

Mr. W. L. Harrison, of Okaihau, wrote asking the Council’s permission to construct a private crossing into his gateway. Cr. C. F. Reed stated that Mr. Harrison was prepared to fit 6 inch pipes, but these would not prove satisfactory. He stated that it was the council’s fault that Mr. Harrison had to construct the crossing owing to damage done by the grader and moved that the crossing be constructed at the council's expense, using 9 inch pipes. The motion was seconded by Cr. H. T. Bates and carried.

Messrs J. J. Bedggood and W. E. Bedggood wrote asking for access to their property on the Ngawhitu Block 1 and 2, and stating that the track which had been used in the past was now unfit for horse-drawn vehicles. It was decided that the matter be taken up with the Native Department with a view to having a road constructed.

Mr. E. K. Plaisted wrote of the dangerous state of two bridges on his access road. The matter was left in the engineer’s hands, after he had informed the council that one bridge had now been repaired, and the second is shortly to receive attention.

Mr. A. C. Roach asked in a letter that the council complete the Pakaru Settlement Road, and it was decided to write to the Public Works Department so as to obtain a grant to finish the road, a distance of only 24 chains.
