In future, the mail for Auckland which closes at Whangarei Post Office at 5 p.m. will be restricted to letters only.
CORRESPONDENCE FOR EXPEDITIONARY FORCE.
The following postage rates have been fixed upon for correspondence addressed to New Zealand and all other soldiers, sailors and airmen of the British Empire on active service. Letters.—By surface transport: The inland letter rate (2d for the first oz. and Id for each succeeding foz.) will apply. Newspapers.—The British Empire rate (£d for 'each 30z.) will apply. Parcels.—Parcels not more than 31b. in weight, X/-. Parcels not more than 71b. in weight (maximum), 2/-.
TRANSTASMAN AIR SERVICE.
The frequency of the service is being increased to three trips each fortnight. The postage rates are as follow:
Australia (including air services in Australia): Letters, 5d each half-oz.; postcards, 3d. ■Great. Britain, via Cairo and Capetown: Letters. 1/6 each half-oz.; postcards, 9d. Egypt and Iraq: Letters, 1/6 each half-oz.; postcards. 9d. Mans close at Whangarei three times each, fortnight.
CLEARANCE OF STREET POSTING-BOXES,
Owing to the restrictions in the use of motor spirit and staff reduction, the clearance of street posting-boxes .will be made once only at 10 a.m. daily, except in the business area, when a clearance at 1 p.m. will also be made.
Air-mall Correspondence for New Zealand and Australian Soldiers, Etc., Overseas—Reduction in Postage.
The air-mail postage rate on letters not exceeding a half-ounce in weight for New Zealand and Australian soldiers, sailors, airmen, etc., serving with the fighting forces anywhere overseas, is reduced from 1/6 to 9d. The postcard rate is reduced from 9d to sd.
The following points are emphasised: —
(1) The reduction applies only to letters to be forwarded by the Empire Air Service via Sydney. The reduced rates will therefore apply mainly to the fighting forces in (1) the Middle East and (b) the United Kingdom when forwarded via Capetown. (2) It applies only to letters not exceeding soz. in weight. Letters weighing over £oz. must be fully prepaid at 1/6 for each £oz. or fraction thereof, e.g., a one-ounce letter must be prepaid 3/-.
TRANSPACIFIC AIR SERVICE.
Postage rates: New Zealand-New Caledonia, If- each half-ounce: New Zealand-Canton Island, 1/9 each halfounce; N.Z.-Hawaii, 2/6 each halfounce; N.Z.-U.S. of America (including transit by air on the U.S. internal services), 4/- each half-ounce; N.Z.Great Britain and Europe (via U.S.A.), 5/9 each half-ounce. The charges for postcards will be half the charges mentioned above.
SECOND-CLASS MAIL MATTER.
In future the closing time at Whangarei Post Office for all second-class mail matter for inclusion in mails for northern offices despatched after 4 p.m. will be 4 p.m. Second-class matter includes all matter not paid for at letter rates
