Wellsford Show Nears Record Takings Of 1940

[Special to “Northern Advocate.”] PAIAVROA Tliis Day

PERFECT WEATHER, AFTER THE PAST FEW DAYS' RAIN, ATTRACTED A LARGE ATTENDANCE TO THE WELLSFORD SHOW ON SATURDAY, AND THE GATE TAKINGS WERE WITHIN A FEW SHILLINGS OF LAST YEAR’S RECORD OF £137.

Cars gathered at the show grounds from a radius of over 40 miles. Visitors were present from as far north as Dargaville and as far south as Waiwera.

The eon rage and enterprise ot‘ the executive' in staging the show as usual despite the difficult prevailing conditions were fully rewarded, and from a financial point of view the show was one of the most successful in the history of the association.

Although entries in the indoor exhibits were hardly up to last year’s record, the quality was fully maintained.

Best Stock Ever,

In several of the outdoor sections new records were established. The cattle, sheep and horse entries were the best in the history of the association, and it is safe to say that no better class of horses has paraded at any show in Northland this year. A feature appreciated by the crowd was the grand parade of the various prize-winners. Their march round the ring was a fine tribute to the quality of the animals produced in the surrounding districts. The Jersey section, said the judge (Mr. J. Smith), reflected fine quality, and although some classes were not well supported, the animals that came forward were a tribute to their breeders. Taken on the whole the bulls were better than the females.

From a breeding point of view, the champion cow was one of the best he had ever seen, while the bull would hold his own at any larger show. Fine Horse Ring.

“It is one of the best horse rings I have ever seen,” said (tie horse judge (Mr. Hosking), “and the quantity of entries in each class has made their separation a very difficult job. “The display of jumping and riding would do credit to any metropolitan fixture, and for a country show the horse ring as a whole would be hard to beat in New Zealand.” The champion hack and hunter were outstanding, the judge remarked.
