FIJIANS FAIL IN “OLD SCHOOL TIE” TRADITION
LONDON. March 11
Dressed in Marlborough College blazers, old school ties and other sec-ond-hand garments, 21 Fijians appeared in the Bristol police court charged with refusing to put to sea. The Fijians signed on in Sydney. They complained that they had been refused a war bonus although undertaking great risks.
Shipping representatives agreed before the magistrate to grant a bonus of £1 10/- a month.
The magistrate sentenced the Fijians to one day’s imprisonment.
