NEW YORK, March 10. THE- HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES APPROVED THE SENATE’S VERSION OF THE LEND OR LEASE BILL THEREBY COMPLETING LEGISLATIVE ACTION. THE BILL NOW GOES TO PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT FOR SIGNATURE. The “New York Daily News” says that the United States Government has opened a drive to obtain bases in Eire considered vital to the protection of the increased flow of aid to Britain;. In exchange the United States would make a loan to Eire of 50,000,000 dollars.
Eirean Minister for the Co-ordination for Defence (Mr. Frank Aiken) is at present coming to the United States by Clipper, his object being to obtain American money and ships, which would sail to Eire under the Irish flag.
Lifeline Of Civilisation.
Informe quarters say that the granting of bases on the south and west coasts of Eire would be the only terms on which tjhe United: States would .advance the cash. A group of prominent Irish-Ameri-cans has asked the Prime Minister of Eire (Mr De Valera) to permit the British to use the Western ports of Eire to enable them to maintain the “lifeline of civilisation.”
The message states: “Only if England survives can Ireland be free. We ask you to do this for Hie sake of Irish freedom, which our ancestors fought to win."
