Economy Must Be Made Democratic

(Received 12.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 11

The chairman of the Federal Monopoly Committee (Mr. J. C. O’Mahoney) at the final hearing today suggested that Congress call a conference of business, labour, farm and consumei leaders, to draft a national economic constitution that would abolish the economic uncertainties “which seem to threaten even our political system.” He also proposed national charters for national business, steps to increase the income of the lower groups, material reduction.of tax rates for new enterprises, and a more vigorous enforcement of the anti-trust laws.

He said the only remedy to save democratic economy which can be found is that of making economy democratic.

The American people must choose between free enterprise and Government planning. If the former, it must be free from both private and public organisations.
