American Reporter Expelled From Rome

(Received 1.30 p.m.) ROME, February 26.

The correspondent of the “Chicago Daily News” (Mr. John Whittaker) has been ordered to leave Rome because his paper is constantly hostile to Italy. Mr. Whittaker is the third correspondent of this newspaper to be expelled.

The “Chicago Daily News,” commenting on the expulsion, says Italy has virtually served notice on the world that it no longer tolerates independent reporting of its activities. The American press, therefore, will not replace Mr. Whittaker until Italy becomes a feasible working place for correspondents.
