Napier Coast Blackout. A stretch of 50 miles of coastline extending north and south of Napier will be darkened tonight for two hours in the most complete blackout test undertaken in this district since the introduction of the reduced likhting regulations.

Kawakawa Building Progress. Rapid progress is being made by the builders on the concrete block of shops and flats under construction in Main Street, Kawakawa. Since work was commenced a month ago a considerable number of concrete pillars have been erected together with ■ a large portion of the rear wall.

Bridge Evening for Patriotic Funds. A bridge evening for Patriotic funds was organised by Mrs. H. M. May with the support of the members of the Kensington Croquet Club. The function took place in the club’s pavilion on Tuesday evening and the winners at the tables were Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Langley, the prizes being presented by the club president, Mrs. J. Courtney. • * * * An Extra Gift. One of the lads who was helping in the packing of parcels at the Town Hall for the troops overseas is minus a new tin of tobacco and one soldier is the gainer. The helper had just pulled a new tin of tobacco out of his pocket and placed it on the table witli the intention of rolling himself a cigarette. The next packer at the table picked up the tin and included it in a parcel for the troops.

Whangarei Cricket Draw. The draw for Saturday’s matches in the Whangarei cricket championship is as follows. —Senior A: Albion v. Onerahi, Reclamation No. 1; Camp v. Services, Kensington. Senior B; School A v. Lovatt’s, at School; Central v. School B, Reclamation No. 3. Friendly game: Old Boys v. Kamo, Reclamation No. 2.

Kensington Croquet Competitions. Results of games in the Kensington Croquet Club competitions were: Stars, Mrs. Fraser and Mrs.. Simons beat Mrs. Calder and Mrs. Smith; buttons, Mrs. Smeaton and Mrs. Fulljaffies beat Mrs. Tibbits and Mrs. Wells; brooches, Mrs. Annette and Mrs. Neale beat Mrs. Andrews and Mrs. McKay; junior buttons, Mrs. Brewer and Miss Hilford beat Mrs. Michaels and Mrs. Fricker.

Home Guard Manoeuvres. Wives of Whangarei Home Guardsmen are this-morning complaining of paspalum stains on their husband's clothing. Two platoons of “A” company last night carried out field training on the Whau Valley golf links, the objective being the capture of ma-chine-gun nests held by other Guardsmen. Motor trucks conveyed the Guardsmen from the drill hall to the golf links, and made the task of the attackers more difficult by searchlight displays. The exercises proved most interesting to those taking part.

Rain Falls This Morning. Early this morning rain commenced in Northland, the first appreciable raiq for some time. Right through the morning showers were experienced. This rain, although not yet enough to soak the dry ground, has benefited pastures and gardens. In Kaitaia. the much-needed rain started at 5 o’clock this morning but at 10 o’clock had commenced to clear and there was promise of a fine afternoon. In the Far North the pastures are in need of heavy rain and that which has fallen is not sufficient, but has been appreciated.

Band's Busy Week. The Whangarei Municipal Band, with the' Whangarei and County Pipe Band, travels to Dargaville next Saturday to assist with the patriotic carnival there. For the Municipal Band it is part of a busy week. On Sunday last bandsmen paraded at the Baden Powell memorial service, and on Wednesday played at the patriotic aquatic carnival at the Whangarei Town Wharf. Next Sunday the band will play at Kensington Park military camp. In addition to engagements the band has held two practices during the week.

Domestic Disputes. The Domestic Proceedings Act. framed to reduce the number of domestic disputes reaching the Magistrates’ Courts, has been in operation for nearly 18 months, states the “Press,” and with the .support and cooperation of citizens, members of the legal and medical professions, Justices of the Peace, and clergy, good progress has been made, according to Mr. James Wylie, advisory officer to the Justice Department under the Act, who is visiting Christchurch. Under the Act, conciliators who included ‘Justices of the Peace in their number, were appointed by the Magistrates, so that complaints made on the grounds (1) failure to maintain, (2) persistent cruelty, (3) habitual inebriacy, could be referred to them in an attempt to reduce the number of cases dealt with in public. Mr. Wylie said that many husbands and wives had as a result been saved from entering the Magistrate’s Court.
