He was a prominent chief of the great Ngapuhi tribe and lived at the Bay of Islands. On account of his sympathies with the warlike Hone Heke he was taken prisoner as a precautionary measure, and detained on a British man-of-war. Subsequently he became a shipowner with several vessels trading along the Northern Coasts. .
