AU eyes were turned to the Balkans. After awaiting the promised offensive in Salonika for some months, the Allies considered the time ripe for a forward move. French troops crossed the Vardar, installing themselves on the right hank, severing the MonastirSalonika railway. Troops poured into Salonika, where the harbour was full of transports. Rumania appeared definitely to have reached the point of joining the Allies. Military preparations progressed openly and there ivas no longer any doubt as to their ultimate object. Fighting in Bukovirca, where the Russians gained successes in hand-to-hand conflicts, was again most .violent.
