Things Astray At Darwin.

Storekeepers and contractors claimed that cargo worth £IO,OOO which comes into Darwin, North Australia, is lost each year before they can take delivery of it. Each shipment, quantities of building material, foodstuffs, and general merchandise disappeared. One contractor complained that he loses 6 per cent of his total imports. Another says he lost 10 per cent, of each shipment. Recently 130 cases of beer, out of a large consignment to a hotel in Darwin, were missing. The shipping company is emphatic that the material was brought ashore. On another occasion a number of cane chairs from Singapore and four. rolls of linoleum disappeared. Some of this material was actually inspected by officials after it had been landed.
