Nurse Thrashes Soldier Found Under Girls’ Bed
C Special to “Northern Advocate ”] GISBORNE, This Day.
Caught beneath a bed which was occupied by two girls, Tere Nepe, a Maori, was thrashed with a stick by a woman who captured him. Accused, it was stated, was on leave from Papakura camp. He was charged before Justices in the Ruatoria court and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within a year. Constable Birch said that a nurse at a large homestead near Ruatoria heard a strange noise during the early hours of the morning on December 26 and found two maids sitting on a bed, apparently frightened that there was a man under the bed. The nurse fortified herself with a stick and an electric torch and ferreted the man from under the bed, thrashing him with the stick and turning him over to the only man staying on the premises.
The police were called, but just before they arrived the intruder escaped by a window.
He was arrested after nearly a fortnight's search.
