Rice Retains Title At Auckland Swim Championship Meet

Tiie Auckland swimming championships were held at the tepid baths last night. The meeting is to be. concluded tonight when the principal event will be the 100 yards men’s freestyle championship. The new 220 yards men’s freestyle champion is P. E. Mathieson, of Waitemata. Second Title Retained. Against three opponents in the final lie opened up a load of about two yards at the lOOyard mark from B. Clench (North Shore). Over the final sprint of 20 yards, Mathieson lasted better and won by three yards. His time v ? as 2min 34 1-5 sec. A second title was won by him, this being the lOOyards backstroke championship, of which he has been the holder for three years. Wins,for Fifth Time. The 100 yards ladies' freestyle championship ivas won for the fifth consecutive year by Miss K. Gray (Gtahuhu). The time was 68 4-ssec. Miss Gray’s New Zealand record, put up two years ago, is 63 3-ssec. M. Shanahan became the new 220 yards breaststroke champion winning by 38 yards from S. Bracegirdle, of Parnell. The 220 yards ladies’ breaststroke champion was Miss J. Harp (Waitemata), Rice Wins Again. Miss R. Stackpole (Newmarket) was again the lady’s 200 metres backstroke champion registering the fast time of 3min 4 2-ssec. Another to retain a championship was R. Rice, of Whangarei, the winner of the lOOyards junior hoys’ race. He registered 694-5 sec. The most Thrilling race of the evening was staged by Nettleton and Even in the 440 yards intermediate boys’ freestyle event. Nettleton secured the title by a touch in smin 50sec.
