Veteran German Airmen To Help In Mediterranean
ROME, January 2,
On the occasion of the arrival in Italy of some sections of the German air force, the Under-Secretary for Air (Pricolo) published an order of the day, stating that the German contingent would participate in the air and naval struggle in the Mediterranean. Italian planes from the English Channel coast, stated to number several hundred, he said, were returning, and henceforili would be used against Greece and also in the Western Desert. Against Shipping. He added that German planes would probably go into action, especially against British shipping in the Mediterranean, although they were also likely-to participate in attacks against Greece and Egypt. One group of Italian chaser planes will remain on the Channel coast. He revealed that only veteran German air units would be sent to Italy. “They must be considered as a large Italian unit,” he said. Bravery Over Britain. The German general, Kesserling, sent a letter to the Italian air commander (General Fougier) praising the bravery of the Italian pilots in the bombardment of England.
He announced that the “AdlerSchild” decoration had been conferred on all members of Italian air corps participating in flights over England.
