Greek Sub's Triumph
(Received 1 p.m.) LONDON, December 29. A .Greek submarine made history when it torpedoed German supply ships. Tremendous Welcome. The submarine was the Papanicolis, and it was accorded a tremendous welcome on arrival at its base after its amazing adventures, says a message from Athens. The vessel crept to the entrance of the bay of Valona on December 25, and sighted a convoy of six ships, the largest a vessel of 15,000 tons, escorted by six destroyers.
The submarine found itself inside the destroyers’ screen, but fired four torpedoes and dived to 170 feet as her crew heard explosions indicating that three of the torpedoes had struck. Hair-Raising Experiences.
Aircraft and destroyers raced from the shore, rocking the Papanicolis with bombs and depth charges. Currents swept the submarine northwards. and it came to the surface after five hours, being unable to steer because of the current. It found itself off the coast of Dalmatia. The submarine later submerged.for between 30 and 40 hours above Valor a, during which time it was hunted by planes. It finally reached the lonian Islands, and regained its hase on December 26.
