Final Parade Of School Calf Clubs At Whangaruru

The final 1940 calf club parade was held at the Whangaruru Native School which, in its second year in the movement, showed a big improvement in the quality of the calf parades 1 .

The judges (Messrs. J. O’Shea and G. S. B. Morrison) complimented pupils on the fact that 11 out of a total of 24 paraded a calf, and that every calf showed evidence of regular care and attention. The chairman of the school committee (Mr P. R. Pene) thanked the judges for their demonstration, and the teachers (Mr and Mrs Kingsford) for the enthusiasm they had been able to inculcate in pupils towards this admirable phase of school education. The winning calves were decorated by »the District Nurse. The final part of the journey to the school was made by rowing-boat. Cn the return journey, heavy weather was encountered, and the official party received a liberal dose of saltwater spray. . Results:— Calf-Rearing.—'Juniors: Brian Reihana 1, Lottie Peters 2. One likely sprinter ran foul of the basketball post, which stood the test better than the calf. A calf-catching competition was won in record time by Sydney Thompson.
