Allowances For Dependents Of Missing Sailors
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day.
The wives and other dependents of officers and crew of the missing steamer Holmwood are to receive allowances under the provision of the War Pensions and Allowances (Mercantile Marine) Act, passed during the recent session. The intended beneficiaries have received the necessary application form and the claims will be handled by the Social Security Department. Taken Prisoner? It is understood that the Government, in making payments, is working on the assumption that the IJolmwood’s crew has been taken prisoner by an enemy raider. This possibility was anticipated in the legislation, a specal schedule of allowances to dependents of members of the New Zealand Mercantile Marine being included where they are detained consequent on the capture of their ship effected by reason of Avar operations. The allowances in respect of ships not over 500 tons gross is 20/- weekly in respect of the wife of’any rating and 10/- each per child. There is a war risk pool operated by the State Insurance Department in respect of ships registered in New! Zealand.
