No Report on Cruiser Clash With Raider

(Received 12 noon) RUGBY, December 9.

Official naval circles in London have nothing to say on reports that the British cruiser Enterprise is in contact with a German commerce raider, which escaped from the auxiliary cruiser Carnarvon Castle.

This is not surprising, as if any British warship has the good luck to get on the track of the raider so soon after its recent escape, a period of silence would be expected before she would make any signal. The Enterprise has a speed of 33 knots and seven 6-inch guns. If the German ship had fallen into the way of this cruiser it would not be likely to be able to evade action, or would the result be in much doubt.

Diomede Scores Success

The German steamer Idarwald, of 5033 tons, which, in company with the German motor ship Rhein, of 6031 tons, sailed from Tampico, Mexico, 10 days ago in an effort to run the blockade, sent out a wireless message which was picked up in Havana, Cuba, at 2.30 p.m. today, stating that she had been attacked by a British cruiser off he south coast of Cuba, and was sinking. A message at 2.40 p.m. stated that the crew were taking to the lifeboats.

The Cuban freighter Mambi later advised that she was proceeding in the direction of the Idarwald.

Scuttling Attempt

Another message states that the German ship is on fire after an attempt to scuttle her.

A .message from Washington says the United States Navy has reported that the Briish cruiser Diomede, which was flagship of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy from 1926 to 1935, captured the German vessel after the crew r had attempted to scuttle the ship. The Rhein is also reported to have been captured by a British cruiser off the coast of Cuba.

Enterprise Ready for Battle,

According to a Monte Video message, unofficial reports ai’e circulating that H.M.S. Enterprise has closed in with the German raider, find is ready for battle.

It was previously reported that the Carnarvon ' Castle officers received word from the Enterprise that she had sighted and was overtaking the raider.
