Kohukohu

The Hon. W. Grounds, M.L.C., returned to his home at Paponga from Wellington on Saturday evening last. Mr L. Hodgson, of Paponga, was a weekend visitor to Whangarei. Mr P. C. Dolbel has been elected chairman of the Kohukohu School Committee, in succession to Mr H. Gabolinscy, who has held that position for the past 20 years, but is now engaged on military duties at Papakura Camp. Mr and Mrs Ralph Watkins, of Rawene, are on holiday in Auckland. Miss I. Dick, of Auckland, is a visitor to Hokianga as the guest of her aunt, Mrs F. Langton, of Rawene. Rainfall Tire rainfall recorded in Kohukohu for November totalled 4.79 inches. The average fall over a 10-year period is 4.144 inches. Card Party The usual weekly card parties in aid of the patriotic funds are being well patronised, and at that held last week, there was a triple tie for first place in the ladies’ section between Mesdames Cobbald, Ashworth and K. Gundry. In the play-off, Mrs Cobbald secured the trophy. The men’s section was won by Mr G. Wright, with Mr F. Langley in second place. Christmas Carnival The Christmas carnival, under the auspices of the Methodist Church, was held at the town hall last Wednesday From 11 a.m. onwards the stallholders were able to report very brisk business.

During the evening, musical items were rendered by the children’s choir, and the Rev. A. P. Dorrian entertained with an excellent musical monologue. During the latter part of the evening, dancing was included in the programme, and this was carried on to a late hour.

Stallholders were:—Sewing: Mesdames J. Wark and K. Cobbald. Cakes and sweets: Mesdames Pheil Thomas and Hayes. Produce: Mesdames M. Lundon, H. Clark, J. Smith and T. Clark. Jumble: Mesdames Gabolinscy and J. Baker. Tearooms: Mesdames J. Fearson and L. Ashworth. Aladdin’s cave: Miss J. Fearson. Christmas tree: Miss N. Cbbbald. Hoop-la: Messrs J. and W. Pearson.

Nail-driving, miniature golf and darts were also played and proved very popular.
