Summer Time All Winter Likely
The continuation of summer time throughout the winter months and its permanent adoption for the duration of the war may be one of the first big decisions taken by Mr Herbert Morrison as Minister of Home Security, says the “News Chronicle.” His predecessor, Sir John Anderson, ordered that summer time should end this year on the night of November 16-17, but following the dockers’ demand for its continuation the T.U.C. circulated all trades unions throughout the country for their views on the question. Favoured by Workers.
Their replies are expected to reveal that nearly 100 per cent, of Britain’s workers —from building labourers to clerks and shop assistants—are in favour.
The extra hour of daylight will not only keep up war output at the docks and factories, but will also give workers a chance to travel home while it is still comparatively light. Result of the canvass will be transmitted to Southport, where the rank-and-file of the trade are to open their annual congress.
Speedy consideration, the “News Chronicle” learns, will be given to the proposal, and an official demand framed to the Government.
