Full Powers To Curb Subversion In S. Africa
CAPETOWN, September 12. The South African Minister for the Interior (Mr H. Lawrence), endorsing the warning by the Prime Minster (General Smuts), that the Government intended to use its full powers to „eurb subversive activities, detailed the actions of the Ossewabrandwag organisation, which was formed as an Afrikaans cultural society. Subversive elements appointed guards for utility buildings, with badges representing them to be soldiers. Attempts were made to tamper with the loyalty of the police, railway employees and soldiers and to obtain military information and arms. The “wild men" of the organisation were obviously getting cut of hand. General Smuts was determined to maintain internal security.
