The “Daily News ” Petrograd correspondent stated that experts were of the opinion that the Germans had given up hope of surrounding the Prussian armies, and were merely seeking positions to allow themselves to dig in before turning their attention to the West An official statement declared that the Russians had taken 40.000 Austro-German prisoners since August 30. German banking agents and sympathisers■ started a formidable campaign against an American loan to the Allies. Mr Asquith, in moving a. credit of £250,000,000. said the amount would carry Britain to the third week in November. For the past 56 days, Britain had been spending at the rate of £3.500,000 Almost 3,000,000 men had enlisted since the outbreak of war, and Lord Kitchener had sent reinforcements, which had enabled Sir John French to extend his lilies and take over 17 miles from General Joffre. A thrilling air duel took place when a British aeroplane forced a more powerful Gentian machine into battle. Finally, the German plane dived headlong to the ground. Later, the British plane claimed another victim. The “Daily Chronicle’s’’ Rome correspondent stated that the Italians surprised an Austrian company when volunteers were lowered by ropes doivn a precipitous wall. The whole column was exterminated.
