Territorials Pack Up For Races At Avondale
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”j AUCKLAND, This Day. Six hundred young territorials, who were being trained for the defence of their country at the Avondale racecourse, have packed away their gear for today and Monday. The reason is that the Avondale Racing Club is holding its spring meeting and the course is needed. There has been some comment in Auckland on this fact. “Are We at War?” The question has been asked: “Are we really at. war—our very existence at stake—or is it all an unpleasant dream?” The opinion is held by large numbers of people that the training of men for the defence of the country and Empire should not be interfered with by the mere necessity for holding two days of racing.
