An announcement that the Government has sanctioned the immediate transmission of £ 100,000, New Zealand currency, to the Lord Mayor of London’s Fund for the relief of distress caused by German air raids was made by the Governor-General (Lord Galway), as chairman of the National Patriotic Fund Board, last night. In a statement. Lord Galway said it had been decided to make the grant in recognition and admiration of the wonderful courage and fortitude of the people of London during the most difficult times through which they were passing. Allocations Being Arranged. This finance would be provided by the National Patriotic Fund Board through its Dominion-wide organisation. Details of the allocation among the constituent patriotic authorities of the board were now being arranged, but in order that New Zealand should make its gesture at once, the standing committee of the National Patriotic Fund Board had approved of the gift. £IO,OOO From Sick, Wounded Fund. The £IOO,OOO includes the provision of £ 10,000 made from the Sick, Wounded and Distress Fund by the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and. the Red Cross Society yesterday at a meeting presided over by Sir James Elliott. The amount will be transmitted to the joint war organisation of the Red Cross and Order of St. John in London to provide immediate assistance for the relief of distress.

Auckland Province Will Contribute

When the announcement regarding the £IOO,OOO gift to be made for the relief of distress in London, was referred to the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis) last night, he said it could be accepted at once that the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council, of which he is president, would be happy to provide its quota, which still h,a.d to be determined.

However, the provincial fund at its many centres throughout the province was available to receive immediate subscriptions. Sir Ernest said: “It is difficult to conceive a worthier objective or a more patriotic purpose than that of providing funds urgently for the relief of distress among the gallant people of London.”
