County Council Supports Kiripaka Busk Acquisition

Support for a proposal to preserve an area of kauri bush at Kiripaka, was accorded by the Whangarei County Council at the monthly meeting today. Representing the North Auckland Forest Society. Mr D. J. Thomson wafted on the council and explained steps taken by the society in an endeavour to secure the area as a scenic reserve.

Negotiations were proceeding with the Government for the purchase of the area, he said. The council should give its support, said Cr. L. W. Smith, who added that it appeared to be a case for the Conservator of Forests. Huge sums were being spent by the department in planting kauri, and some of this money should be made available for the purchase of such areas as that at Kiripaka, he said.

“Flourish of Trumpets.”

"I think we should write to the Min-ister-in-Charge of Forests, who from time to time, with a flourish of trumpets, has told us what he is going to do,” said the chairman iMr J. A. S. Mac Kay).

The Kiripaka area was already planted with trees, some of which were 50 years old, and all that had to be done was to acquire and preserve it, he continued.

Jf any progress was to be made in preserving the kauri, it was in acquiring areas, self —and naturally—sown. “By preserving such an area as that at Kiripaka, something permanent is being done.” lie said, in moving that the council should write to the Minister. pointing out the value of the area as a forest reserve. Wonderful Piece oi misli.

Seconding the motion. Cr. J. Morrison said the Kiripaka area contained a wonderful piece of bush. “For farming purposes, the land is worth very little,” ho said. “Land carrying one sheep to the acre is better left in bush.” Cr. Morrison, however, did not agree with some of the prices being asked for that type of land. The motion was carried.
