“Kia Ora” Censored Out Of Cable

[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day. The ways of official censorship are exceedingly strange. No message in a foreign language may leave New Zealand by cable.

There must be no Latin tags or French quips. But when the Auckland Fire Brigade today cabled to the London Fire Brigade a message of congratulations on its magnificent achievements the censorship excelled itself. The Maori “Good Luck” —Kia Ora, known wherever New Zealand is known, was ruled a foreign language and deleted. The Auckland Fire Brigade today sent this cablegram: “A magnificent effort. The eyes of the world are upon you. We are all with you in spirit and would like to stand side by side. Keen up the good work.—Officers and men of the Auckland Fire Brigade.”
