14 Latvian Leaders Suicide

The “Daily Telegraph” Helsingfors correspondent states that many tragedies among prominent personalities have followed the decision of the Baltic States to enter the Soviet Union. The president of Latvia (M. Kvirlis Ulmanisj died from heart failure the day the decision was taken, and 14 ex-members of the Latvian Cabinet have committed suicide. Thousands of ex-Lithuanians, including several ex-Ministers, have been arrested. A branch of the Soviet Foreign Affairs Commissariat has replaced the Latvian Foreign Office.
