Parliament To Review Situation In Secret Session
[Special ,to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day. Before the Budget debate was resumed in the House of Representatives today, various sessional committees were nominated. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) in a brief statement said the Government had decided that, in view of alterations which had occurred in the international situation since the last secret session, it was advisable that members should again meet in secret session so that individually and collectively they could review the situation as it confronted New Zealand today. They could then also potential and possible developments. He proposed that a secret session should commence at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday. There would be no limit as to the time the House would rise, but he indicated that he would make a statement on behalf of the Government outlining the position. There would be no necessity for long statements by other Ministers, who, however, would be available to supply any information required. As far as the form of the debate was concerned, the objective would be to give members the fullest and freest opportunity for obtaining information, or expressing their views. Congratulations to Mr Fraser. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Hamilton) also made a brief statement in which he extended to the Prime Minister, on behalf of the Opposition, heartiest congratulations on Mr Fraser’s appointment as Privy Councillor by His Majesty the King. This was a high honour which had been conferred by His Majesty and he felt sure the Prime Minister would fully appreciate it. He trusted Mr Fraser would enjoy the distinction and grace the honour for many years. Mr Fraser thanked Mr Hamilton for his congratulations and good wishes. Thanks for Support. Naturally, he said, he appreciated the high honour and confidence shown in making the appointment. The pleasure, great as it would be in ordinary circumstances, was not unmixed at the present moment because of the war situation and the situation of the British Government and peoples of Britain. The additional responsibility was great because it made New Zealanders feel they were part of one British family, and whatever happened in one part of the Empire affected them. Mr Fraser expressed thanks for the help and support given him and the ( Government by all sections of the House in the critical period since last September. A fellow Privy Councillor (Mr J. G. Coates) crossed the floor of the House and shook hands with Mr Fraser.
