Abraham Pickus, Cleveland oil man, and self-styled peace-salesman, shown at his suite in the Hotel Commodore as he attempted to phone leaders of all the important countries in Europe. Reporters listened in on earphones. Finally, after running up a big phone bill, he talked to a Signor Starace, who said he was secretary to Count Ciano, of Italy. Pickus told him he wanted Mussolini to call a conference among European nations to slop the war. Pickus has made numerous long-distance calls to European leaders in the past.
