Mr G. T. Yates
OBITUARY
The death took place at the Mangonui Hospital, Kaitaia, on Friday morning, of Gustavus Timothy Yates, of Peria, aged 69. Mr Yates was the son of the late Mr Samuel Yates and was born at Parengarenga, where his father owned 68,000 acres of land, including what is now known as the Te Paki station, and a store on the Parengarenga Harbour. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School and, on the death of his father in 1901, took over the management of the cattle and sheep run and store, a business closely associated with the gum industry. In 1913 he took up his residence in Peria, where he acquired a farm of 180 acres and a run in Honeymoon Valley of 1100 acres. The Parengarenga property was sold and the old homestead overlooking the harbour still stands in a fairly sound condition. The house was occupied by the late Colonel Allen Bell for some time before his death and is at the present time the home of Mr E. T. Frost. Jn the garden are some fine trees, including a date palm. Director. j For some years after taking up his J residence at Peria, Mr Yates was a director of the Oruru Dairy Company, and in this capacity, as well as in his private life, lie was esteemed for his ability and character. He married Miss Emily Bartley, whose parents resided in Shortland Street, Auckland, in 1899. About tv/o years ago his health began to fail and he was obliged to go to hospital three weeks ago. His wife survives him and also four sons. One son, Edward, is in Egypt, Samuel is in camp at Papakura, Robert is on the farm, and Brown Yates, j the fourth son, is in Egypt. 4 Out of j the four sons three have offered and have been accepted for active service.!
