Great Welcome For Competitions

TO SAY THAT YOUNG NORTHLANDERS WELCOMED THE RETURN OF THE COMPETITIONS IS TO PUT IT MILDLY. Within a few days of the announcement of the S’s in the Picture Competition, a hundred entries had reached H.Q. ,and they continued to arrive in good numbers until the closing day. Wax quite like old times going through the piles of entries, disallowing a word 1 hero, calling in the Taniwha to take charge of an entry or two which broke some of the competition rules, and generally sorting out the entries to discover the prize-winners. “Hello,” said the Princess, when we discovered that many of the competitors found more than 300 S’s. “There’ll be a good many mistakes to mark out here. ’ She was quite correct., for Northlanders had allowed their imaginations to run riot, and listed some S’s that the artist had not included in the picture. "First of the four half-crown prizes went to Margaret Wright, a Wlmngaroi competitor, who listed 97 allowable S’s. Alary Fraser, a Northlander who still takes an active inteiest in the page, though she now lives in Auckland, came second on the list with a corrected list of 93 words. Third prize was divided between Leslie and. Maureen Flood, each of whom sent an Si-word entry, and the remaining half-ciown also was awarded for an 87-word entry sent in by Norman Moigan, II onto. . AVe'd have liked very much to have rewarded everyone who sent in good entries with certificates of merit. There were so many entries, however, that this was quite impossible, and so we had to give merit cards only to those whose entries were of an exceptionally high standard. Half-crown prizes were awarded to: — MARGARET WRIGHT 10 Grey Street, Whangarei (97 words correct). MARY FRASER Grecnluthc P. 0.. Auckland (93 words correct). LESLIE and MAUREEN FLOOD Moerewa R.D., Moerewa (87 words correct), NORMAN MORGAN Houto (87 words correct). HONOURS LIST: Certificates of merit were awarded to the following Young Noit(danders Lojma Grower. Tamaterau; Dell Cotton, Pnwera; Tni Biggnr. Kuawai; John Colton, Pnwera; Noel Keogh, Poroti; Lawrence MrOcadv and Bosalcen McOready, Moerewa; Ins Walters, Mangapai; .Marie .McDonald. '> ‘-'Advocate'’ Office, < Water Street, Whangarei. ( Tuesday, June 18. 1940. ) j> Hello Everybody—- \ I'm glad to be able to report that H.Q. is practically } free of cold germs. But we’ve had a lew other \ catastrophes to keep us busy. s Kupe, while biting a particularly hard chocolate biscuit, suddenly looked startled, and found he had < broken a tooth. I was very glad one of my cakes \ wasn’t responsible. I’d never have lived that down. > Then the S.P. managed to get his hand badly ■ banged—all because small boys will persist in poking •’ round where they shouldn’t, and naturally get into \ difficulties. > Looks as if it’s my turn next, but so far my < surprise has been a very pleasant one a box ot ) violets, carnations and heather from June and Jean ) Jenkins, of Ngararatunua. I Maybe the bad luck isn’t looking my way just > now, but perhaps I’d better touch wood or whatever is necesary to keep on the safe side. ) And that reminds me that some of our pet supers stitions have really interesting beginnings. I wonder if you’ve ever thought why they began? Three I \ have in mind are the supposedly unlucky acts ot ? spilling salt, breaking a mirror, and walking under / ladders. > . How about having a guess at the origin of these? j Maybe we’d be able to print your ideas and see how s near the mark they are. | $ Princess, Northland Tribe.
