Drivers’ New Award: Anomaly Adjusted

[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day. A new motor and horse drivers’ award has been issued by the Arbitration Court as the result of an anomaly providing the same wage for drivers working either 40 or 44 hours a week. This anomaly has been adjusted. The present scale of weekly wages will continue to apply to drivers working 40 hours, but the rates of men doing 42 and 44 hours a week will be increased 21 and 5 per cent, respectively. The minimum weekly wage for 40 hours for drivers of motor vehicles up to 2 tons is £4/16/-, over 2 and up to 4 tons, £4/18/6; over 4 and up to 51 | tons, £5/1/-; over 51 tons and up to 'lO tons, £5/5/-; over 10 tons, £5/8/-. Drivers of tractors and trailers receive £5, and those operating small motor rollers, £4/16/-. Drivers of tractors, scarifiers, rollers, graders, mechanical shovels, excavators or other motor-driver implements on construction, maintenance, formation or other work receive 2/8 an hour. Youths may be employed as motor drivers at £2/12/6 a week from 18 years of age, £3/1/- from 19 to 2‘J, and £3/9/3 from 20 to 21. Men driving and attending one horse are paid £4/13/- a week, and £4/16/where there are two horses. For each horse above two an extra 6d an hour or 2/6 a week is paid. The weekly wage schedule for youths is £2/7/6 from 18 to 19 years, £2/16/- from 19 to 20, and £3/4/6 from 20 to 21. Bakers may employ youths between 17 and 18 at £2/2/6 a week. Hours of Work. The daily hours will be worked continuously, except for meal intervals. Time in exces of nine hours in any day, exclusive of that required to attend to horses or vehicles, will be paid for at overtime rates, and all stable work or attendance on vehicles in excess of the weekly hours will be paid for at rates varying from 2/2A to 2/4i an hour. Drivers and assistants employed by firms engaged in goods transport services operating under the Transport Licensing Act will work 88 hours a fortnight. The following \veekly wages will be increased by 5 per cent.: Up to 1 ton, £4/18/-; up to 2 tons, £5/1/-; 2 to 4 tons, £5/3/6; 4£ to 6£ tons, £5/7/-; over 6A tons, £5/10/-; youths, aged 18 to 19, £2/15/-; 19 to 20, £3/3/6; 20 to 21, £3/14/6. Drivers’ assistants, employed in any duties other than driving, will receive £4/10/- for a 40-hour week. Youths under 18 will be paid on the 40-hour week’s basis at the rate of £2/7/6; 18 to 19. £2/12/6; 19 to 20, ’£3/1/-; 20 to 21, £3/12/-. The award Will operate for a year from next Monday.
