Raising Taupo Lake Level
The Fublic Works Department has accepted the contract of Downer and Company, Ltd , of Wellington, for the raising of the level of Lake Taupo to guarantee an adequate flow of water for the Arapuni hydro-electric station. Lake Taupo is at its highest level during the spring rains and the flow at that time is much greater than is required at the Arapuni power station. When the peak load is required in the autumn, however, the lake is at its lowest level. The new scheme will hold the water level five feet above the present gauge, or about a foot below the maximum. By this means Lake Taupo will be converted into a gigantic reservoir and the flow of the Waikato River will be controlled. The plans provide for a canal to be cut from a point about 400 feet above the bridge over the river at Taupo to a point a similar distance downstream. The canal is to be 115 feet wide. The river is to be diverted into this and the old course filled in. Crossing the canal will be a reinforced concrete dam and a six-span bridge. The installation of a boat lock in the canal is also planned. Already 10 men are employed on the construction of a temporary deviation around the canal. Modern machinery is being assembled at Taupo. With a system of double shifts it is hoped to Complete the work within 15 months. Between 40 and 50 men will be employed. PROVED PILE CURE. Hundreds write praising the effectiveness of 2ANN.
