Mayor Of Christchurch Enlists
[Per Press Association Copyright .] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Among this morning’s enlistments was the Mayor (Mr. R. M. MacFarlane, M.P.), who was a caller at the recruiting depot in Cathedral Square. Mr. MacFarlane, who is member of Parliament for Christchurch South, is a married man, 39 years of age, and he has an eight-months-old daughter. Commenting on his decision to enlist, the Mayor said he was prepared and had been prepared for a considerable time to take part in any military capacity in which he might be called on to serve, even to going overseas. Since the beginning of the war, however, he had been devoting all the time he could possibly spare to further the necessary organisation of. war work and the Canterbury Provincial Patritoic Fund, in particular. Will Take On Anything. He now felt the time had arrived, in view of the manner in which the war situation had developed, when anyone who could render service, even to the extent. of going overseas, should come forward. On the next occasion on which he had an opportunity' of delivering a public address, he added, he would make some further comment on the war situation, and his own attitude. He said: he was prepared to take on anything and go anywhere. ‘
