Gaoled For Publishing, Distributing Subversive Leaflet
[Per Press Association. Copyright ] INVERCARGILL, This Day. In the Magistrate’s Court John Edward Lawrence and William Sparks appeared on charges of publishing and distributihg subversive leaflets. Lawrence pleaded guilty to two charges of distributing and not guilty to publishing. He elected trial by jury, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Sparks, who elected to be dealt with by the magistrate, pleaded guilty to distributing, and not guilty to publishing leaflets. He was found guilty of publishing, and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. Mr J. G. Barclay, M.P., returned from Wellington by this afternoon’s express. He will leave for Wellington again to attend the meeting of - Parliament, to be opened on Thursday.
