Wish Of People
It felt that in facing up to the danger, and in introducing adequate measures to meet the situation, it was carrying out the wish of the people from one end of the country to the other. Those who had placed in the past great value upon personal liberty and freedom would be ready, and must be ready, if their country and they themselves were going to survive, to sacrifice for the time being these liberties and privileges they enjoyed for the sake of the greater and happier future. Mr Fraser added that it was for us not only to pray, and devoutly hope it would be answered speedily, but also to work, whatever that work may be. Such conditions as would hamper that effort would have to be overshadowed.
If longer hours and labour were necessary, the working people of the Dominion w T ould face up to that necessity, because it was only by facing up now, and by presentday sacrifice, that they could ' maintain and retain the standard of living and the conditions of labour that this country had won and enjoyed. The Government had announced an “all-in” policy. That meant that every one in the Dominion, and every atom of the country’s services that was necessary to the war measures, must be subordinated to the requirements of the Dominion and the British Commonwealth. Mr Fraser asked everyone to show proof of the faith that was in them by works that were successful and would achieve their objects.
